Surface infiltration basins: reducing the risk of flooding

Surface infiltration basins are a nature-based solution involving vegetated ground excavations that buffer runoff and gradually infiltrate it into the soil. These basins remain dry except during heavy rainfall periods. Typically, open infiltration basins are used for large watershed areas ranging from 2 to 20 hectares.

 

This method reduces the volume of runoff collected by stormwater networks, increases groundwater recharge, and helps mitigate heat islands in urban areas, all while providing a simple and cost-effective water management solution. Infiltration basins can be constructed along roads, urban streets, parking lots, logistics platforms, airports, construction sites, and service stations.

 

Since hydrocarbon pollution is commonly transported by runoff from busy urban roads, this stormwater management solution must include effective pre-treatment before water infiltrates locally into the soil.
